NU Serving The Nation
Basically,
NU is a religious social organization engaged in such fields as education and
preaching. But apparently the two fields have a very broad sense, including
educating and enlightening the nation, as well as preaching to build and
maintain this state. Therefore, for NU defending the country from any possible
threat is a religious obligation.
On account of the NU'sprinciples, since its birth NU has been concerned with issues of community and nationality. Even if we want to retrace, in fact NU, especially its founders have had very significant roles. In 1916 the clerics (kiai) founded a national movement organization so-called Nahdlatul Wathon, set up a trade union named Nahdlatut Tujjar, in addition to set up a strategic research institute well-known as Tashwirul Afkar, around 1919.

Its role in dealing with nationality has been in line with its role in dealing
with religion, to educate and enlighten the nation and strengthen religious
thoughts. Then such organizations were merged in 1926 and became Nahdlatul
Ulama (NU). Today, NU has successfully addressed various historical obstacles
for its 85-year journey.
During its 85 years, NU has positioned itself as the largest Islamic organization. It has contributed and had extensive influence on the Indonesian history. In turn, NU is expected to continously increase its role in overcoming various problems facing Indonesian society in particular, and the world in general.
Currently, the national issues have emerged as an indication of the decline of the national spirit, as voiced by all parties. As a nationalist Islamic organization, NU could not be silent, and be also concerned about the current condition of nationality. For that reason, various national activities have been held as an effort to strengthen the national commitment.
The issue of nationality has now been very different from the colonial era. Therefore, all parties engaging in the issues of nationality, must take into account of the issues proportionally. Anywhere there will be movements that could potentially threaten the integrity of the nation.
On the other hand the wave of globalization by itself has also dilutied the spirit of the nationality. Therefore, there should be new strategies on how to communicate with the outside world, but not dissolve in the flow of globalization. This capability is apparently needed at this time.

because if the globalization with its global capitalist system is left free to
operate, then the people who are unable to compete will be the victim. For that
reason, the NU's struggle for the nationality, is closely related to its
populist vision, namely to protect the duafa (the poor), and for the welfare of
their lives physically and especially spiritually.
In fact, the international community, both from the Islamic world and non-Muslim world, many asked for the NU's role in solving various problems they face. Seeing such demands ultimately NU also ignored it, thus making the work areas NU became increasingly widespread. This course requires its own energy.

Warning NU birth of 85 years last month, is a series of activities that reflect
the history of NU in devoting itself to the development of Islam and
nationalism. And in the future, will be increasingly enhanced its role in
creating world peace.
Operation of this dialogue, among others, aims to inform the public Nahdliyin and Indonesia in general, that NU joint forces of another nation will continue to fight for issues of nationality, keeping the Unitary Republic of Indonesia, Pancasila, the 1945 Constitution. This includes maintaining a plurality of the country, so that this nation remains a nation of independent, sovereign, united and peaceful.
Not only in the national territory, other nations out there also waiting for NU's role in creating peace in the midst of a world full of conflict and unrest. Various guidance is realized NU with trying to make a gathering of Sufis around the world. Sufi teachings are intended to be a polite way of religious life, peace profound and substantial.

In Afghanistan, a country that every day the conflict, NU was asked to take a role to reconcile. We know, war-ravaged Afghanistan, both factional strife within the country or from outside, who commanded NATO. With a loud endeavor, finally NU could deal with conflict groups in one table, in Jakarta.
This meeting is the first time the talks they do. Apparently, they really wanted to learn from NU and Indonesia, how to make peace in a country.
